Lecture with Dr. Efrat El-Hanany
In dialogue with "The Modern Woman" exhibit now showing at the Vancouver Art Gallery, which focuses on works of celebrated male French artists (Daumier, Degas, Manet, Pissaro, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec and others), Dr. Efrat El-Hanany will explore women's more active relationship with the visual arts through a consideration of the careers of such 19th-century French Impressionist painters as Mary Cassatt, Berthe Morisot, Eva Gonzalès and Marie Bashkirtseff. This illustrated lecture will include a broader consideration of traditional representations of women in western art and will address such issues such as gender, sexuality, the femme fatale stereotype, the gaze, and the gender-power relationship.
